Any decent musician with high school level teaching or beyond should be able to keep track of at least very simple time changes within a piece of music. With a conductor up front, it's easy to watch and get the tempo as well as your place in the measure. But what happens when you're practicing by yourself with a metronome? Metronomes can't change when the downbeat occurs unless you tell it. And telling it usually consists of pressing a button or two, flicking a slider, or turning a dial. In my experience, those things are hard to do while playing. So, unless the music just happens to get back on track in a few measures (two 2/4 measures in the middle of 4/4 for example), you have to either suck it up and get confused, or turn off the downbeat. Neither option is very great.

To remedy this in personal woodshedding and sectionals, I wrote Conductor's Beat. Conductor's Beat allows you to generate a metronome click track in .wav format (which can then be converted to .ogg or .mp3) according to a complicated count structure. This file can then be put on a tutorial CD for learning music. Conductor's Beat is great for instructors, musicians, Drum Majors, section leaders, beginners, or virtually anyone who plays an instrument.
